WIPO Statistical Report Released on December 14, 2015 – Industrial Design Application

On December 14, 2015, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has released the latest statistical report of industrial design application.

The table below shows the growth of industrial design applications between 2013 and 2014.

For the first time in more than 20 years, the total number of industrial design applications filed worldwide has dropped by 8.1% to about 1.14 million in 2014. The decline is mainly due to a sharp decrease in industrial design application filings by Chinese residents.

Top Industrial Design Applicant

China has received 564,555 industrial design application filings, followed by the European Union Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM) with 98,273 filings, Korea with 68,441 filings, Germany with 61,054 filings, and Turkey with 48,799 filings.

Growth of Industrial Design Application of Top Industrial Design Applicant

While China (-14.4% growth), Turkey (-4.5% growth), and Korea (-2.3% growth) have lower industrial design application filing activity in 2014 than in 2013; however, Germany (+6.6% growth) and the EU’s OHIM (+1.3% growth) have increased filing activity.
