WIPO Statistical Report Released on December 14, 2015 – Patent Application
On December 14, 2015, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has released the latest statistical report of patent application.

The table below shows the growth of patent applications between 2013 and 2014.

Patent application in 2014 is another worldwide annual rise for fifth straight year. In total, approximately 2.7 million patent applications have been filed in 2014, which is a growth of 4.5% compared to 2013.
Top Patent Applicant
China with 928,177 filings (+12.5% growth), the United States with 578,802 filings (+1.3% growth), Japan with 325,989 filings (-0.7% growth), Korea with 210,292 filings (+2.8% growth), and the European Patent Office with 152,622 filings (+3.2% growth) are the top five patent applicants of the world. Brazil and India are ranked among the top ten patent applicants of the world as well.
Growth of Patent Application of Top Patent Applicant
Among the top 20 patent applicants of the world, the Islamic Republic of Iran (+18.5%) and China (+12.5%) have the fastest growth in filings, followed by Vietnam (+11.3%), Turkey (+9.4%), the Philippines (+9.3%), Indonesia (+7.7%), and Thailand (+7.1%).
Patent Application Filed Aboard
American applicants have filed the most applications abroad (224,400), followed by Japanese applicants (200,000) and German applicants (105,600). By contrast, Chinese applicants have filed comparatively fewer applications abroad (36,700).
Top Technological Field of Patent Application
Computer technology (7.8%) has the most patent applications worldwide, followed by electrical machinery (7.4%), measurement (4.8%), and digital communication (4.6%). Computer technology and digital communication have been the two fastest growing technological fields over the past 20 years.
Patent Grant
An estimated 1.18 million patents have been granted worldwide in 2014. After strong growth for the previous five years, 2014 only has relatively modest growth of 0.3%. This is mainly due to fewer patent grants issued by the Japan Patent Office (JPO), which has granted 50,000 less patents in 2014 than in 2013.
Effective Patent
An estimated 10.2 million patents were effective worldwide in 2014, with the bulk of them in the United States (24.7%), Japan (18.8%), and China (11.7%).
