WIPO Statistical Report Released on December 14, 2015 – Trademark Application
On December 14, 2015, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has released the latest statistical report of trademark application.

The table below shows the growth of trademark applications between 2013 and 2014.

Trademark application in 2014 has showed strong growth. The total number of trademark applications has reached 7.45 million in 2014, which is a growth of 6.0% compared to 2013.
Top Trademark Applicant
China is the top trademark applicant with 2.22 million filings, followed by the United States with 471,228 filings, the European Union Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM) with 333,443 filings, France with 269,837 filings, and Japan with 242,073 filings.
Growth of Trademark Application of Top Trademark Applicant
Among the top five trademark applicants of the world, China (+18.2% growth) and Japan (+16.9% growth) have showed double-digit growth. The United States (+6.7% growth) and EU’s OHIM (+2.7% growth) have also showed filing increases. However, France has a 10% decline of filing. Among the top 20 trademark applicants of the world, India (+15.4% growth) and Mexico (+10.8% growth) have also reported strong growth.
Trademark Application Filed Domestically
Residents filing for trademark protection within their domestic jurisdiction have accounted for 75% of global trademark filing activity.
Top Industry of Trademark Application
Trademarks applications are most common in the advertising and business management industry, accounted for 9.8% of total trademark filing activity. It is followed by the clothing industry, the scientific industry, the photographic industry, the measuring instrument industry, the recording equipment industry, and the computer and software industry.
Trademark Registration Issued
The total number of trademark registrations issued worldwide has increased by 16.3%, reaching 3.49 million. China has accounted for most of this growth. Along with China (+36%), Argentina (+19%), Brazil (+13.2%) and Turkey (+12%) have also showed large increases in trademark registration activity.
