TIPO publishes the top 100 patent ranking of 2015
Taiwan Intellectual Property Office (TIPO) has recently published a statistics report of patent application and patent grant of 2015.
In terms of domestic corporations, the top one domestic corporation is still Hon Hai Precision Industry Company with 659 patent applications and 1,661 patent grants in 2015. Hon Hai Precision Industry is also the top one domestic patent applicant in 2015. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company with 503 patent applications is, for the first time, the top second domestic patent applicant in 2015. Far East University with 278 patent applications being the top sixth domestic patent applicant in 2015 is also the top one patent applicant of all universities and colleges in 2015. However, invention patent applications from enterprises and utility model patent applications from universities and colleges have both decreased in 2015.
In terms of foreign corporations, Intel Corporation of the United States having 956 patent applications and 630 patent grants, with the number and growth of patent applications being the highest in the recent 10 years, is the top one foreign patent applicant in 2015. Toshiba Corporation of Japan with 413 patent applications and Tokyo Electron Limited of Japan with 404 patent applications are the top second and top third patent applicants in 2015. In particular, Toshiba Corporation of Japan has 10-20% of growth in the number of patent applications in 2 consecutive years, showing proactivity in the field of intellectual property.
In terms of the major companies in each industry applying invention patent applications, the semiconductor industry shows proactivity in the field of intellectual property in 2015. For example, the numbers of patent applications by Intel Corporation of the United States and Samsung Electronics Company of Korea have both increased by 30% or 1.4 times in 2015. The number of patent applications by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company has also increased in 2015. On the other hand, the panel industry shows less proactivity in the field of intellectual property in 2015. The number of patent application from the panel industry has continued to decrease. For example, the numbers of patent applications by Samsung Group and LG Corporation of Korea have decreased by 30-50% compared to last year. The numbers of patent applications by Au Optronics Corporation and Innolux Corporation of Taiwan have also decreased by 20-50%. The number of patent application of mobile devices has also showed recession in 2015. For example, the numbers of patent applications by Apple Inc. of the United States and HTC Corporation of Taiwan have both decreased by 7-15.4% in 2015. The numbers of patent applications by these two companies have already been decreasing for 2 consecutive years.
Overall, the numbers of patent applications, including invention patent application, utility model patent application, and design patent application, by domestic applicants have all decreased in the recent 3 years. In particular, the number of invention patent applications by enterprises has showed the most decline.
